Each November, men of all ages let it all grow out, as in their facial hair of course, to show their support for The Movember Foundation, a global charity that aids in helping men live healthier lives and tackles men specified issues and disease such as prostate cancer and more.

To show your support for the cause, participate in the hairiest 5k race ever, the Mustache Dache, on November 12th in downtown Detroit. Whether you grow out your own mustache, or stick on a fake one, join your fellow mustachers as you run, walk, skip, or trot your way through Detroit for a good cause.

The race starts at 10:00 am at Atwater Brewery and is open to all ages. And ladies, you’re invited too. Just because you can’t grow your own mustache doesn’t mean you can’t rock one just as good as any guy can! Have fun with it and channel your inner cowboy with a horseshoe  mustache, or go the classic route with a handlebar mustache. Be creative and dress up as famous mustache rocking characters or people such as Luigi and Mario, Borat, or Charlie Chaplin. Or sport your very own home grown mustache — the opportunities are endless!

All participants receive a Mustache Dache t-shirt, a mustache dache medal, a complimentary mustache consolation by local barbers, and if you’re of age, an adult beverage to sip on. Post race, gather at Atwater brewery for drinks, food, a photo booth, a costume contest and much more!

$40 for adults, $20 for children (12 and under). To register, visit http://mustachedache.com/detroit/

What type of mustace will you be rocking at this year's race?

At Paragon, we recognize that pets are really more like family. That’s why they’re welcome at all our apartment communities!

Cats and dogs are permitted*, though some breed restrictions apply. (Contact us for details.) Residents simply pay an initial $200 non-refundable pet fee, as well as $25 monthly pet fee.

However, if folks adopt a pet from the Michigan Humane Society and move into a Paragon property, we’ll take $200 off their move-in cost and waive the initial pet fee.

“At MHS, we believe that animals truly enrich people’s lives, and nothing can enrich your life quite like giving a wonderful pet a second chance at a loving home,” says Ryan McTigue, public relations coordinator at MHS. “It’s great to see an organization like Paragon encouraging its residents to help save more animal lives by choosing the adoption option!”

Ryan encourages those interested in adopting to stop by an MHS location and speak with an adoption counselor about their idea of the perfect pet, so they can be matched with the furry friend that’s best for them.

Shopping at farmers markets is a great way to stock up on seasonal produce that’s minimally processed, as well as meats, cheeses and eggs that are raised without hormones and antibiotics.

Plus, you get to meet the people who grow your food, and support small family farms that struggle to compete against large agribusiness.

Make the most of your market trips with these six tips and tricks:

  1. Stick a few plastic grocery bags in your reusable totes and use those for filling with your produce instead of using plastic bags from the merchants.
  2. Arrive early for the best selection and freshest products. Or arrive late for last minute deals on the produce farmers want to move before heading home.
  3. Buy what you need to use within a week and plan to freeze or can the rest.
  4. Bring small bills and correct change for easier transactions.
  5. If you’re buying meat or dairy, ask the vendor to hold it for you until you are ready to go so it can stay cool for as long as possible.
  6. Get to know your vendors, and place your orders in advance.

Presented by Purina One, Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo will be held outdoors under tents in the Zoo’s front parking lot beneath the landmark water tower. There is no charge for admission or parking for the adoption event; however, regular admission and parking fees apply for those visiting the Zoo. The event will include special appearances by Detroit Zoo mascots the Zooper Heroes.

Giving Apartment Style — We Did It!

A big-tall-cold-ice filled glass of lemonade thank you goes out to all the Paragon Properties, volunteers, and residents that made “Alex’s Lemonade Stand—Giving Apartment Style” a huge success.

The goal was to raise $5000 for the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, that helps to fight childhood cancer. The goal was reached through the generous donations and efforts of residents and volunteers, and selling lemonade.

By reaching this goal, Paragon Properties will match the amount raised, doubling the funds raised to combat childhood cancer. The best part is that the goal was surpassed!

Once again, a big Thank You to all who participated and donated to such a worthy cause.

Unfortunately, there are very real realities among us, like not having food or shelter. And fortunately, there are organizations that work daily to help. But, they in turn need our help to keep doing what they do.

One such organization is Gleaners Food Bank, which serves southeast Michigan. Gleaners tries to make the effort for you to help as easy as possible. On their website you can access the “Gleaners Virtual Food Drive.” Instead of you you purchasing food from a store and bringing the items to them, you can shop or donate directly from the Gleaners website.

“You can help us reach our goal of distributing the equivalent of over 100,000 meals every day to our hungry neighbors in southeast Michigan. With a demand at an all-time high, we have to purchase more food than ever in order to meet the needs of our 550 food pantries, soup kitchens, and community agencies.

Your generous gift to Gleaners will provide our hungry neighbors with the nutritious and healthy meals they need. Of every dollar donated, Gleaners uses 94 cents for food and food programs. One dollar provides three meals for a hungry neighbor.

  • Virtual Food Drives can be done from your computer without having to remember to shop for cans and haul them to work
  • Your dollar goes further because of our bulk purchasing power and efficient distribution network
  • Virtual Food Drives are green (i.e., no boxes, no bags, no transportation costs or carbon emissions)
  • Your donation is 100% tax deductible

Please make a gift today.”

Gleaners Virtual Food Drive – Make A Gift

If you like, you can also contribute in a way that may be familiar to you by bringing donations to your local Paragon Community.

For the length of the cold weather, canned and non-perishable donations will be accepted at Paragon Properties Apartment locations during normal business hours, Monday-Saturday.

With Valentine’s Day approaching, there’s always that spike of love in the air. But, Valentine’s Day isn’t just for that significant other. It’s for all of those you care about. Wife, husband, mom, dad, son, daughter, sister, brother, cousin, grands and all. You don’t have to go out and buy a bunch of candy or gifts. You can give something as simple and as powerful as a hug.

THE POWER OF HUGS

By JAYNE MORRIS.

There are many ways to hug: the bear hug, cheek hug, sandwich hug, group hug, back-to-front hug, side-to-side hug… yes, hugs come in all shapes and sizes!

One thing they all seem to have in common though is that when given authentically, they have the power to really make you feel good. In fact, they are scientifically proven to be good for you. Research by Grewen and Light, two hug-happy US psychologists showed that the act of hugging causes the brain to release the chemical oxytocin. Oxytocin is cardio protective, which means that it protects the heart. So, in other words, when you hug someone you’re actually doing your heart some good – and theirs too!

According to Kathleen Keating, mental health counselor, consultant and author of The Little Book of Hugs, hugging not only feels good and produces heart loving oxytocins, but also has the power to:

  • Dispel loneliness
  • Overcome fears
  • Open doors to feelings
  • Build self esteem (“Wow! She actually wants to hug me!”)
  • Foster altruism (“I can’t believe it, but I actually want to hug that old fart!”)
  • Slow down aging; huggers stay younger longer
  • Curb appetite; we eat less when nourished by hugs
  • Ease tension
  • Fight insomnia
  • Offer a healthy alternative to alcohol and drugs
  • Affirm physical being
  • Make happy days happier
  • Make impossible days possible

What’s more the power of the hug keeps working to dispense benefits long after the hug’s release! But before you rush off and hug the next passer by in the street to get your daily oxytocin boost, be sure the hugs you share are thoughtful, respectful and care-filled.

Hugging is something we are able to give naturally as children when we are very young, but if hugs aren’t modeled to us frequently as children we can be left a bit uncertain about how to hug,. We may even feel unhuggable. Hugs have the power to heal, if we open ourselves up to giving and receiving them. Offering a hug to someone requires the strength to be vulnerable, because of the risk that the hug may be rebuffed or misinterpreted. But it is a risk well worth taking as Juan Mann, founder of the Free Hugs Campaign discovered when he first set out to offer hugs to strangers.

In the summer of 2004, Mann headed to Pitt Street Mall in Sydney carrying with him a huge sign with the words FREE HUGS printed big and bold. He didn’t thrust hugs upon people, he offered them openly and with kindness. Yet it took 15 minutes and hundreds of passers by before someone stopped to have a hug. After their brief embrace she remarked, “Young man, don’t ever stop what you’re doing, it means more than you’ll ever know”. Not only did the hug transform that lady’s day, but Mann says it changed his life. The confidence that first hug gave him carried him through from hug to hug, and six years on, his hugging movement has reached far and wide across the globe, with groups of huggers going out onto the streets offering free hugs daily from Russia to China and Poland to Australia.

In our stand-offish society many of us are wary of hugging and have not learned to ask for the emotional support we need. If hugs don’t come your way often, be brave and ask a friend or loved one for a hug! Pave the way by asking “I would like to give you a hug, if that’s all right with you?”. If you are hugging someone for the first time, pay attention to your intuition on what feels acceptable, as levels of hugginess will vary from person to person. Some people will need to feel sturdy trust before they feel safe enough to hug. Respect other people’s responses to giving/receiving hugs. A post hug ‘thank you’ or ‘that felt good’ is often a nice way to validate a shared hug.

Hugs come naturally to very young children because they are instinctively open to giving and receiving love and touch. If you have children be sure to hug them often, with affection, tenderness, support and playfulness; so that they grow up centered, balanced, happy, healthy and able to give and receive great hugs!

In The Illustrated Guide to Free Hugs, Mann mentions the flow-on effect of hugs, explaining that someone might not fancy a hug, but maybe inspired to extend an offer of kindness to someone else. In this way they get a kind of metaphoric hug. Metaphoric hugs can be just as powerful as physical hugs because as Dr David Hamilton explains in Why Kindness Is Good For You, performing acts of kindness releases the same oxytocin neuropeptide as full on bear hugs do.

Not only are hugs good for happiness and health, they are also good for business. In Hug Your People, top CEO, inspirational author and speaker, Jack Mitchell explains how metaphoric hugs help build energized, focused teams, which he claims are at the heart of every great organization. He introduces his concept of hugs as an important managerial mindset and shares this 5 step hug based blueprint for business success:

  1. Be NICE – because how you treat one another is as important as how you treat your customers
  2. Learn to TRUST – it’s a crucial part of building strong working teams
  3. Instil PRIDE – in your team and the work that they do; give them all the ‘tools’ they need to do their jobs well
  4. Try to INCLUDE your team in decision-making processes; you can’t do it alone, so reach out for their input
  5. Generously RECOGNIZE the contributions made and celebrate victories, big and small, because they all count

Whether up close and personal or a metaphoric hug in the form of an act of kindness towards another human being – give a hug to someone, somewhere each and every day. Your health, happiness and business will thank you for it, as will all the other people you reach out to in heartfelt hugging way.
