The raw food movement is alive in Detroit

February 8, 2012
By

I’ve been curious about the raw food movement for at least six years. Don’t get me wrong – I’m a serious foodie who will gravitate toward anything that resembles a delicious burger or mac n’ cheese in a flash. But the concept behind consuming high quality uncooked, unprocessed organic foods prepared in a delicious way intrigues me too.

Enter Detroit’s The Raw Cafe, located near the Majestic entertainment complex at 4160 Woodward Ave. The restaurant presents the raw food movement, something that was starkly missing from our bustling foodie scene here in metro Detroit. It’s a great addition and a diverse menu when compared to longtime favorites like much-hailed Slows BBQ in Corktown, the upscale Mexican and Italian flavors of El Barzon in Mexican Town and neighborhood joints like Cass Cafe.

The Raw Cafe supports healthy living initiatives – something on our minds this time of year. But it goes beyond tossing together a great salad. Check out the restaurant’s latest menu offerings and you’ll see what I mean. The Raw Burger is made with walnuts, portabello mushrooms, carrots, herbs and spices. Pasta Alfredo is made with zucchini pasta, mushrooms and a nut-based sauce.

On the go? Grab an antioxidant-rich Celery Lemon and Ginger smoothie or a Blueberry Banana smoothie to keep your memory sharp. Even the desserts sound heavenly, like a slice of Dutch Apple Pie, with organic apples, pecans, almonds and spices.
