Winter? What Winter?

The Alert

There’s a silent alarm that goes off in the mind of a tennis player when it’s sunny and 60º outside. That alarm is much like the storm warning sirens we hear with impending bad weather. These internal sirens lead us to stop whatever we’re doing, grab our gear and head outside to our favorite court. We don’t even have to call each other, we just know to be there.

Well, for some that silent alarm goes off a little sooner, say, at sunny and 49º, like yesterday’s weather. I won’t say that these are die-hard tennis fanatics, actually I will. Because if the humidity had been higher, to ward off that chilly wind, I’d have been out there myself. Yes, I have an addiction and there is no 12-step program to fix this. I could have worse addictions, but this one I don’t mind.

Playing outside in sunny, 49º weather? I thought about it hard, but I’ve been at this cross-roads before. The cross-roads of cold weather and intense desire to play tennis outside; and the result was not pretty; several days of a head cold.

So far, at least in my part of Michigan’s winter, the weather has been more on the pre-Spring side. No complaints here. I still wish I’d been on the court…..still tempting as I think about it….the sun’s still out…..it’s still in the mid 40′s…..the sun’s still out…..if I wear a bandana maybe I won’t catch a cold…..the sun’s still out….
