Anton Art Center Features the Best of Michigan Artists

January 24, 2012

The Anton Art Center in Downtown Mount Clemens will be featuring some of the best Michigan artists during the Michigan Annual XXXVIII art competition.

The juried art show will feature works ranging from photography to pastels from 38 Michigan artists who will compete for $1,600 in prizes. Andrea Eis, chair of Art and Art History at Oakland University, picked them from among 217 submissions. This year’s artists come from as far away as Spring Arbor (ceramic artist JD Garn), Grand Junction (oil painter Gail Potocki) and Allendale (oil painter Shannon Maisel) and as close to home as Mount Clemens (painter Lauren Calhoun).

“What really makes this event special is the level of diversity – ranging from established artists to those who are self-taught, teens to seniors, and traditional to contemporary works,” says Jennifer Callans, director of the Anton Art Center. “This exhibition highlights exceptional pieces created in all media including ceramics, drawing, fibers, painting, photography, sculpture and more. Most of the works are available for purchase.”

A Michigan printmaking drop-in workshop will be held in conjunction with the Michigan Annual XXXVIII. The workshop is free to attendees and will give visitors of all ages a chance to try their hand at linoleum block printmaking. The workshop will be held Sunday, Feb. 12, from 1-4 pm. No registration is necessary.

The show opens with a reception from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27, and runs through Feb. 24.

The Anton Art Center is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. The center is closed on Mondays.

Admission to the Anton Art Center is free and open to the public.

The Anton Art Center is located at 125 Macomb Place in Downtown Mount Clemens.

This is so 3-D and realistic looking and it appears as if the fish just jumped out of the water and waiting to be rescued.

    Who is the artist?

The piece pictured, Fish Out of Water, is by artist Samantha Luotonen.
