Veg Out: A slice of Nantucket

December 11, 2011
By

Veg Out, the series of West-Michigan veggie-friendly yums takes another bite.

Destination and Meal #3

Pocasett pizza from Nantucket Bakery

A slice of Italian heaven is what came out of the oven earlier this week. My wonderful partner in love and crime treated me to a pie topped with olive oil,
artichoke hearts, onion, fresh tomatoes and fresh mozzarella. There are great rewards to knowing the way to a vegetarian’s heart.

Waiting for the pizza, which took about 10 minutes longer than expected, the baker treated us to our choice of Nantucket’s baked goods. I had a Mexican sweet/spicy chocolate cookie. It was a coco treat with a spicy finish that came surprisingly, but refreshingly, late into chewing. My partner had a classic chocolate chip cookie that was soft and filled with homemade goodness.

The first bite of the pizza was a juicy blend of tomato, olive oil and hearty chokes with cheese stretching into what was the perfect taste. Everything was fresh and delicious.

We paired it with a bottle of 2008 chardonnay from Martha’s Vineyard next door. More to come about this gem of a market place, which my partner calls a little piece of paradise in Grand Rapids.

Vegan friendly? I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a vegan-friendly cheese substitute. Also, check for gluten free, vegan-friendly dough.

Possible sides? I hear the bread sticks are worthy of endless attention.

Beverage choices? Coffee is always available, but Martha’s Vineyard carries any kind of beer, wine and juices you can imagine from vineyards and breweries near and far.

Cost out of the door? $9.99 plus tax. But our pizza flipped in the over and he gave us $2 off. The quality was a $30 pizza, though. After this, Pizza Hut and Papa Johns will seem like a cruel joke.

Hidden in  a series of one ways, Nantucket Bakery is at 200 Union Ave. in Grand Rapids. There is no seating indoors or outdoors, but you can enjoy a muffin, cookie, pie or cake in the window seal while you wait for your order. Pizza also is available by the slice.
