When I attended Western Michigan University several years ago, I was encouraged to get involved with one of the many student organizations on campus. I then started to investigate the possibilities. Right away, I knew the Greek Life wasn’t for me. I only speak English. Then a friend who knew I had a passion and an in depth knowledge for music suggested that I inquire about the student radio station. So I did and the rest is history. For over twenty years I’ve been making a living from talking on the air. If I had to re live my college experience I wouldn’t change a thing. Well perhaps I would do something different. I would join The WMU Squirrel Club. The Squirrel Club at Western is a registered student organization with 150 members strong. Founded in April, the group is dedicated to acting as ambassadors for the little guys. I’m an animal lover and squirrels have always intrigued me. Although I question their judgment when crossing streets; because I’ve seen my fair share of road kill. I can appreciate, however, the way they mercilessly dare and tease the dogs in the neighborhood. Squirrels don’t get enough credit for their intelligence and resourcefulness.
For instance, the St. Louis Cardinals need to consider forming a club paying homage to the squirrel. One lone squirrel should at least be on the payroll. Just this past week a little fluffy tailed rodent made national headlines with his bold antics. The critter dashed in front of home plate in the fifth inning during game 4 of the National League division series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Philadelphia Phillies at Busch Stadium. The Cards won that game and ended up taking the series. Did the squirrel jinx the Phillies? They’ve been almost unbeatable all year. They were on their way to another World Series title…but then the Busch squirrel ruined everything for the Phillies.
