Imagine back to 1980. OK, I realize that many readers may not have been born yet, but work with me on this. Some guy from the future stops by your house and tells you that in less than 30 years, you’re going to have this amazing phone that you can carry around in your pocket. Not only will it make and receive calls from anywhere, it will also hold all of your music, let you watch TV, help you navigate across the country, and take pictures. You say, “Great, I’d like a sample of whatever you’ve been smoking,” before he floors you with this—“you’re going to be taking pictures of your dinner and sending them to your friends!”
Fast forward to 2011. We’re all taking pictures of food. There’s blogs and websites devoted to “food porn”. Have you ever stopped by refrigeratorsoup.com? It’s one of my favorites for cooking inspiration. How many of you post your food pics to flickr or other sites? How many food blogs do you read each week? And how often do you shoot food at home, and while dining out?
My 11-year-old daughter recently got her first cell phone. She was out for dinner a couple weeks ago with her mom, and when dinner arrived, she whipped out her phone and said “I’m going to take pictures, like Daddy.”
So what is it about food that evokes the photographer in us? Why do we share not only photos of our own creative cuisine, but also the cookery of others? Granted, a photo is worth a thousand words, so maybe it’s more effective to tweet a photo of the amazing chocolate cake you just had than it is to try and describe it in rich detail.
With this blog, I hope to introduce you to some great food and wine w/ pics, alert you to a couple restaurants, and provide some recipes for homemade noms, and more. Stay tuned!
