Sports road trips are a fun part of fall

We're not Iowa fans, but we did enjoy cheering against Ohio State.

It’s one of the most wonderful times of the year — when the Tigers are about to clinch the division title, the University of Michigan is still at a winning record, and the Lions haven’t blown their season yet.

And even though we have plenty of sports events here in Detroit, my husband and I are again planning on two road trips to see UM football on the road. Why? Because we both love a good road trip, we both love exploring a new city, and we’re both UM football fans. And we love to trash talk the other team, too.

This isn’t the first time we’ve gone on the road to watch sports. One of our first trips together when we were first dating was to Madison, Wis. to see UM on the road. After we were married, one of the best and most fun weekends we ever had in Chicago was seeing Tigers at the White Sox on Friday night and UM at Northwestern on Saturday. Heck, even my girlfriends took me to see Tigers at the Sox on the road for a bachelorette weekend. Last year, my husband’s college buddy moved to Iowa City. We took one weekend and drove out to see him and cheer against Ohio State while we were at it.

We have two trips planned for this year. Next month, we’re off to Chicago to see UM play Northwestern again. Last time, the stadium was easily half UM fans. In fact, we ran into some people we’d met casually at a home game! This time, we’ve rented a condo for the weekend and plan on having a blast. In November, we’re planning on a repeat trip out to Iowa to see UM on the road again out there. We probably won’t get tickets to that game, but even watching it at the sole UM bar in the other city is a good time. (We’ve also done it while visiting San Francisco and Washington, D.C.)

For us, a sports road trip is a part of fall. We load up the car, pack lots of snacks, download some new music and podcasts, and have a good time. What do you think? Do you take sports road trips, or do you prefer to watch the game on your own big-screen TV?
