I’m still recovering from that sports-filled weekend

September 12, 2011

um vs notre dameMan oh man, what a weekend in sports, huh? I don’t even know where to begin. I do know this — I watched a lot of television this weekend.

Before you read any further, you should know that I’m a HUGE tennis buff. I played in high school and in college, have played on at least two rec leagues since graduation, and do Cardio Tennis at an indoor facility all winter long. I subscribe to Tennis magazine, and my husband knows if I’ve been home because Tennis Channel is on the TV when he turns it on. So, you can imagine I was all over the US Open this weekend. Even before I came home from work, I would periodically check the scores on USOpen.org, to see if Americans Andy Roddick and John Isner could stay in it (they couldn’t). Then it was tennis, tennis, tennis all weekend….

…. Until my husband took over the remote on Saturday. He’s a University of Michigan grad, but there was still plenty to watch until their first night game. We have a bunch of friends who are Michigan State University grads (I know…) and we like to keep an eye on what’s going on in the Big Ten anyway. It was good to see them crush a team and I wish I could have said the same about University of Toledo, but maybe next year. (So close!)

I think we terrified both our dogs with all the screaming from watching the UM game Saturday night. My husband had a friend over, and I was sure they would both lose their voices during the last few minutes of the game. My husband’s phone rang immediately after the game ended and I knew right away it was my mother, calling to finally celebrate. We fell asleep exhausted and happy.

And add onto that the third consecutive Tigers’ sweep and — shocker — a Lions victory, and it was a great weekend! I also caught the women’s tennis final yesterday and plan on watching the men this afternoon.

My husband and I have the discussion every year whether spring or fall is better for sports. Spring brings about basketball and hockey finals, and baseball season — which we love — is just starting. But he does love his college football. We always agree at the end of the discussion that we love fall sports just a little bit more.

What do you think? Did you make it any of the games? Did you do any tailgating?
