How old were you when you first got interested in music? You probably sang the alphabet song and nursery rhymes not long after you could talk. But how about a formal music education? Were you allowed to play an instrument in your middle school music class? Did you take piano lessons?
I ask this for two reasons: One, there are several proven ways music education helps kids, such as improving their creative thinking, exposing them to other cultures, and teaching them how dedication and hard work pays off. Another reason I bring this up is because there’s a new music program coming to the Kalamazoo area that’s much more than just music education.
This story gives all the details about it, but I’ll sum it up: The music program in question is called El Sistema, and it bills itself as a program of social change. Young children work with established musicians to learn to play music by ear; other programs also provide tutoring in other subject and meals. And, they perform frequently, to get them excited about playing music.
I really do think this proposed program is a great idea. While some kids excel at academics, and some excel in sports, too many never get the chance to even try music. Sure, there’s not going to be a music genius in every class, but if a few kids can benefit from what music lessons will teach them, I think it would be worth it.
How about you? Have you found that your music lessons as a kid benefited you later in life?
