A fun day yet this summer in Oshtemo

salvation army brass bandTake the kids — or nieces and nephews, or cousins, or other little kids you have laying around — and take them to one more fun day before summer is officially over.

Oshtemo Fun Day is an annual event sponsored by the Oshtemo Rotary Club, and is scheduled for Saturday at Flesher Field. A pancake breakfast catered by Ted and Marie’s will be from 8-11 a.m., with the festivities running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the park on South Ninth Street, just south of Stadium Drive. Lunch will be available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission and parking are free, and visitors can purchase tickets for concessions and rides.

The event isn’t only fun; funds raised will go toward good causes. Beneficiaries include Oshtemo Rotary’s literacy project at Prairie Ridge Elementary School, a new pavilion at the Oshtemo Township Park, and Rotary International polio eradication and safe drinking water projects.

The day’s events are pretty varied, and some of the sound really cute for the kids: a dunk tank; a belly dancing demonstration; a West Michigan Air Care helicopter landing; a fire dog leading children through stop, drop and roll; a stuffed animal vet check-up by Oakwood Animal Hospital; a raffle; a Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra musical petting zoo; Kalamazoo County mounted division, K-9 team and emergency management command post; pet adoptions; child identification kits; Michigan Army National Guard display of six vehicles; Salvation Army brass band; bag pipe players; DJ; Texas Corral cowboys giving roadster rides; kids’ rides; animal exhibit; and many more activities.

Whew! Surely, there is something on the list that you would find fun or, at least, interesting. So if the kids or nieces and nephews are driving you nuts in the last few weeks before school starts, take them out to ride a few rides, get their stuffed animals checked out, and maybe refresh some of their safety skills. It seems like it will be a good time all around!
