Tennis, Volleyball, Softball Anyone?

August 10, 2011

The city of Southfield has recently been honored with the American Heart Association 2011 Gold Level Fit Friendly award.

Usually given out to companies, it is quite a distinction for the entire city to be recognized, on July 18th, with this honor.

It’s no wonder why; with the activities and facilities in the city that enable and encourage residents to stay active year-round. Take for instance an event that happened this past weekend.

Tennis players, volleyball players, pickleball players, anyball players all joined together to participate in the 3rd Annual Seniors Softball game, held Friday, August 5th. at Southfield’s Inglenook Park. Don’t let the “Seniors” part of that title fool you. Seniors is a very liberal term when it comes to sports.

All during the year residents and non-residents alike, participate in seasonal sports that keep them active and in-touch with others that share the same interests, in Southfield sport facilities. Some players even cross-over into some of the other sports just to give them a try or to add something new to their list of physical activities.

Either way, health and well-being is one of the many benefits of staying active and engaged. And, it’s especially nice to have so many others to encourage you.

Now, with summer in full swing, the ball players take a special day out of their respective activities to band together to participate in a softball game and picnic for yearly bragging rights of the traveling trophy.

Usually with 75 to 100 of those ‘young at heart’, in attendance to play or just be where the action is, the day always lends itself to be a special day of food, fun and camaraderie. There’s plenty of trash talking during the games because the eventual winners want it all remembered until next years rematch.

There were enough people to split each team into two entities. So team A1 and A2 squared off against team B1 and B2, respectively, on separate diamonds. The bragging rights and trophy goes to the team with the highest accumulated runs of both games combined.

The games were very competitive, with many unexpected runs, hits and errors. You got to see who really had skills as a softball player in another life. All-in-all, it was great fun.

Oh, yeah, and the Athletics, my team, pulled off the upset over the heavily favored Tigers!
