I’ve seen a few fliers for Maker Faire here and there, at Eastern Market and around the neighborhood, and I’ve been wondering what it was and why they can’t spell “fair” correctly.
As it turns out, it’s a pretty big event, held at The Henry Ford in Dearborn. The tables I’d seen before had been kids with robotics, but, as it turns out, anything that can be made can be displayed at Maker Faire — food, fashion, electronics, you name it. According to the website, it’s a two-day, interactive and family-friendly event that takes arts, crafts, engineering, food, music, science and technology projects and the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset to the next level. It takes place Saturday and Sunday, the 30th and 31st.
The creations are divided into six categories: arts and crafts, science and engineering, robotics, sustainable living, fun for kids, and music and fire arts. I had to double-check that last one; it’s not fine arts, it’s FIRE arts. Which also means, of course, that that part will be pretty darn cool.
Actually, all the six divisions sound like they would be fun to take in. I have zero artistic talent, so I always appreciate a good arts and crafts display; same goes for science an robotics; and I have a very strong interest in sustainable. And who doesn’t love some good music and flames?
Did you go to last year’s Maker Faire? What was your favorite attraction? And are you planning on going this year?
And you know, I never did find a good explanation as to the “faire.” I assume it’s because of the creative nature of the festival. Do you have a better explanation?
