Summer Blockbusters

June 30, 2011
By

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for us movie goers. Films are going to be released that we have been anticipating for months or even years, depending on when you first drooled over the trailer.  Therefore I am going to present to you my “Must See” Summer Blockbuster list of films whose arrival I have been patiently awaiting.

In my opinion it definitely kicked off last week with the premiere of Bridesmaids;

A comedy starring Saturday Night Live natives Kristin Wiig and Maya  Rudolph as well as the always hilarious Ellie Kemper [The Office]. I am looking forward to seeing these three women interact on the big screen. From all of the reviews I’ve heard, both men and women will be able to get a laugh out of this gem. Bridesmaids was released Friday, May 13, 2011.

I am a bit skeptical when it come to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Yes we will have Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush, but what about Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightly? I feel like it will not be the same without the main three characters form the last three movies, but I am willing to give it a go. Penelope Cruz is an amazing actress I’m sure she can hold her own. Pirates have never disappointed me in the past therefore I am anticipating the return on Barbossa and Jack Sparrow on their journey to the fountain of youth.  Are you ready for Captain Jack? He is back Friday May 20, 2011.

I have been waiting since July, 2007 for Harry Potter and the Deathly

Hallows II. As the last installment of the film series approaches I grow antsier. Even though I have read every book cover to cover and am already aware of the imminent battles and deaths, I am still excited to see how it will all be played out. My prediction is that it will be at the top box office this summer.  HP7 opens in theaters in the US July 15, 2011.

The Hangover is one of my most treasured films. The wolf pack is back and up to their old antics in The Hangover II and this time in Thailand. They somehow manage to lose someone else and are clueless to where that person is and the events the night before. Sounds familiar?

It’s absurd, facetious and insanely comical nature is what attracts me the most. I hope to find these characteristics in part II. As well as the beautiful and talented Justin Bartha and Bradley Cooper.  And we mustn’t forget the hilarity brought by Ed Helms [The Office] and Zach Galifianakis. I have high hopes for this blockbuster, But we know what they say about sequels. We shall see.

X-Men First Class

X-Men First Class looks amazing! The special effects are surreal, there are new characters introduced and we are able to learn the  back stories of mutants we already love and respect. There are trailers specifically tailored to  the new mutants introduced in this movie. I am far beyond thrilled to see this film. X-Men returns Friday June 3, 2011.

Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon

has been teasing me for months with a teaser trailer. The trailer mostly takes place in outer space, insinuating that transformers also landed in the moon sometime in the distance past, I’m sorry but it is impossible to get a good read on a plot when that is all they are leaving me with. All I know is that I am anticipating the inevitable, epic, action packed battles between the Autobots and the Decepticons. I’m sure we are going to miss not having Megan Fox in this film but the rest of the cast has signed on as well as some new faces, including  the talented John Malkovich,  the dreamy Patrick Dempsy, Ken Jong  and all of his vivaciousness  and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley who is making her first film debut. Let’s see if this movie is as satisfying as the first two were. It is set to hit theaters July 1, 2011.

Notable Mentions:

Super 8 [June 10, 2011]

Green Lantern [June 17, 2011]

Captain America: The First Avenger [Friday July 22, 2011]

YellowBrickRoad [June 1, 2011]

Cowboys and Aliens [July 29, 2011]
