Send your kids to science camp this summer

science campKids driving you nutty over summer vacation? There are options to keep them occupied all summer long, and to keep them learning, too. Head over to the Detroit Science Center’s website to learn about the programs.

Honestly, they sound like a blast — something even I would like to do at age 31. Alas, I’ll leave the fun summer programs for the kids. Although, there are programs for kids as old as eighth grade… Do you think I could pass for a middle-schooler? OK, OK. I’ll stop.

For the littlest scientists, children entering preschool and kindergarten, they’ll learn about plants, insects and weather through hands-on activities one week; dinosaurs another; then animal sounds and music; then the seasons; and, for the last week of camp, vehicles such as planes and trains.

For the kids who are a bit older, entering first, second or third grade, they have the option of a three-day pirate camp, a two-day music camp, learning about the rainforest’s plants and animals, creepy crawly creatures, outdoors, dinosaurs, food science, inventions, space, geology, and the senses.

For kids entering grades four, five or six, they also have various camps they can attend: Extreme science, including Mt. Everest, the ocean floor, and record breakers; the force of water and the water cycle; the human body; tsunamis, tornadoes and other natural disasters; flight in many forms; dinosaurs (of course!); healthy living; simple machines; space; the geologic history of Michigan and Michigan discoveries; and the secrets behind Hollywood’s special effects.

Last, but not least, if you’re a scientist that’s a bit older, entering grades seven or eight, there’s also a camp for you. Learn how forensic scientists analyze a crime scene, participate in a fossil dig and dinosaur skeleton construction, kitchen chemistry experiments, or what may be the science of the future — flying cars, space travel, etc.

The camps’ prices vary on the number of days and if you’re a member of the Science Center or not, so check out their website for more details. And if your kids do go, I hope they have a great time!
