Remember how excited (or mortified) you used to get when you knew the big top was coming to town? The big red and white tent; circus animals trained to jump through hoops of fire or juggle balls; a few handfuls of clowns smashed into a tiny car; popcorn, cotton candy and sticky floors that make you excited and slightly nauseous; the strange ladies with three arms or scales who get sliced in half in a box and magically pieced back together.
Yes, the circus is memorable. I remember hearing the Earth Wind and Fire music blasting through the radio, announcing the Universal Soooooooooul Circus was coming to Detroit. Nothing was more fun than rocking to old school jams with my family and classmates as elephants and tigers played and danced with blacks clowns.
Well, I don’t know if the Universal Soul Circus ever came to South Haven, but the circus was prevalent in the tiny town.
The arts center in South Haven is at 600 Phoenix St. Contact them at 269-637-1041.
Don’t just make the trip about the circus though. South Haven has plenty to do. And while it may be too cold for water games, you will find lots of museums, restaurants, classes and lakeshore beauties to enjoy. Want to know what’s going on the day you plan your trip?
