Win $300 gift certificate to WMU Bookstore in EcoMug contest

The EcoMug program aims to reduce the amount of waste on the Western Michigan University campus.

If you’re a Western Michigan University student, you know what an EcoMug is. The EcoMug is a stainless steel travel mug given free of charge to all incoming first-year and transfer students at WMU.

Started in fall 2009, the program aims to reduce campus waste and save money by minimizing the number of disposable cups across campus. Those who use it receive special discounts at campus cafes and local businesses, according to a press release. The National Wildlife Foundation recently lauded the project as a top contributor to campus environmental sustainability.

And now the Office for Sustainability at WMU is holding an EcoMug art contest with a grand prize of $300 in gift certificates to the WMU Bookstore. The contest is open to all current undergraduates and graduates of the university. To enter, create an original piece of artwork highlighting the financial, environmental or social benefits of WMU’s EcoMug program and deliver it to the Office for Sustainability, 1313 Faunce Student Services Building, by 5 p.m. Thursday, March 24.

Entries will be judged in two categories — Most Artistic and Most Persuasive — and contestants may use their choice of media, including but not limited to photography, painting, sculpture and graphic design. The EcoMug must be featured in all entries.

Prizes will be awarded as follows:

• Grand prize for the best overall: $300 gift certificate to the WMU Bookstore
• Best in “Most Artistic” category: $100 gift certificate to the WMU Bookstore
• Best in “Most Persuasive” category: $100 gift certificate to the WMU Bookstore
