When Snyder unveiled his $45 million massive budget overhaul, he asked for “shared sacrifice” from all residents of the state of Michigan, according to the Kalamazoo Gazette. It included $1.2 billion in permanent spending cuts, including that for public schools, universities, local governments and personal tax breaks. It also eliminated before- and after-school programs, hundreds of state jobs and benefit or wage concessions from public employees.
The plan also eliminates tax breaks for seniors and low-income workers, as well as tax deductions for things like donating to public universities.
The cuts also include:
- A person may not be on welfare for more than 48 months, with exemptions for incapacity and hardship.
- Eliminates 300 field worker positions at the Department of Human Services.
- Closes one prison to be determined.
- Reduces the number of Michigan State Police, saving $3.2 million.
What was your reaction to the cuts? Was it too much? Was it a necessary evil to get our state back on track? Let us know in the comments section.
