Get ready to celebrate National Margarita Day Feb. 22

Who doesn't love a good margarita?

It’s no secret: One of my absolute favorite drinks is the margarita. On the rocks, salt on the rim — and no flavors like strawberry, please. So imagine my delight when a friend of mine informed me that tomorrow, Feb. 22, is National Margarita Day.

According to the Food Channel, socialite Margarita Sames invented the original margarita in 1948. It was during a party at her cliffside hacienda in Acapulco, according to the story, that Margarita began experimenting with “the drink.” She mixed Tequila Herradura, Cointreau and fresh lime juice. Today, the margarita is the No. 1 most popular cocktail in the U.S.

More fun facts about the margarita, according to the Food Channel:

• The margarita was the most popularly ordered drink in 2008, representing 18 percent of all mixed drink sales in the U.S. It was followed by the martini, rum and Coke, vodka and tonic, and the cosmopolitan.
• Americans consume an average of 185,000 margaritas per hour.
• Atlanta, Miami, St. Louis and Nashville boast the best margaritas.
• The first frozen margarita machine was invented in 1971, based on a soft-serve ice cream machine.
• The U.S. is the No. 1 tequila market — yes, even bigger than Mexico.
