SPCA of Southwest Michigan partners with PetSmart Charities

A nonprofit animal rescue in your own backyard has partnered with a national charity program to help rescue more adoptable dogs and puppies than ever before.

The SPCA of Southwest Michigan, 6955 W. KL Ave., Kalamazoo, was chosen as PetSmart Charities’ newest shelter partner for the national Rescue Waggin’ Program.  This program is a national transport initiative, sponsored by Pedigree, that transports homeless dogs and puppies from communities with high pet populations and very few potential adopters to shelters like the SPCA, where there are exceptional adoption programs in place and more space for the animals.

The SPCA is one of only 16 other animal shelters across the country that serves as a destination shelter for this program.

The first Rescue Waggin’ arrived at the SPCA facilities from West Virginia on January 25, and will continue every month, arriving from shelters along the East Coast.

“The SPCA of Southwest Michigan has an incredible adoption program in place,” says Susana Della Maddelana, executive director for PetSmart Charities. “They have the right combination of spay/neuter resources in their community and the ability to reach out well to potential adopters, so that when a dog or puppy arrives on their doorstep, they are able to find good homes for these pets quickly.”

During their trip in the Rescue Waggin’ vehicle, dogs and puppies enjoy the lap of luxury with air-conditioned accommodations, complete with piped-in lullabies to help them sleep and video monitors so the drivers can keep an eye on them.

The Rescue Waggin' will travel to the SPCA every month with adoptable dogs and puppies.

“We’re very excited to be a part of this program,” says Kevin M. Ryan, executive director for the SPCA of Southwest Michigan. “We set high standards here and are delighted to be in a position to help save more lives. Our priority is always to help the pets in our community, so no dogs in our shelter will ever be displaced to make room for transported dogs. But because we have high adoption rates, we are in a unique position to help other animal welfare agencies save the lives of dogs and puppies who otherwise might be euthanized or languish in animal shelters for months at a time.”

The Rescue Waggin’ program has been lauded by industry veterinarians and animal welfare experts as the gold standard for pet transport. For more information on the Rescue Waggin’ program, visit the website.
