Last year an earthquake shook the environs of Haiti, devastating the country. One year and one day later, the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts will celebrate Haiti’s art and culture with a special exhibit.
Art in the Evening: Haitian Art: Vibrant Past, Perilous Future is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13 in the museum’s auditorium, at 314 S. Park Street. Docent and Haitian art collector Denise Wierman will talk about the country’s current state as well as the rich legacy of artwork Haiti has given the world. Visitors can view an animated film titled Black Dawn that features a bevy of Haitian artists.
According to the museum:
The one-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Haiti that killed 230,000, injured 300,000 and left 1,000,000 homeless is January 12. The quake’s path also struck the island’s rich artistic traditions, destroying most museums, galleries and public spaces containing Haiti’s artistic treasures.
It is hard to believe after viewing all the images of devastation and loss, that Haiti was once a vibrant mecca of culture and art. With the immediate need of cleaning up debris and rebuilding homes and infrastructure taking precedence, its hard to imagine that Haiti can ever regain its original glory.
The event itself is free but donations will be accepted and provided for a nonprofit organization that supports art in Haiti.
