Western Warm-Up introduces students to university programs

Waldo Stadium is shown on the campus of Western Michigan University.

When you’re a new student at a seemingly enormous university, getting involved on campus can be a pretty overwhelming idea. You’re not sure what’s out there, what fits your personal interests, and if you’ll mesh well with the other members.

Well, if you’re heading to Western Michigan University this fall, that whole process just got a little easier. The third annual Western Warm-Up will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, in the Bernhard Center’s East Ballroom. Students will be able to see what the university’s academic programs and student organizations have to offer in a laid back setting.

“This event showcases the many involvement opportunities available at WMU,” Lynnae Stankus, associate director of Student Activities and Leadership Programs, said in a press release. “It’s important that students know what’s out there, so they can find places to pursue their passions and make friends who share their interests.”

More than 75 University departments and registered student organizations will be handing out information and free goodies, and refreshments will be available. Students can be entered to win prizes by completing a punch card at the event. Winners will be announced at the Campus Activities Board’s Miller Movie later that evening. Students must be present at the 9 p.m. event in Miller Auditorium to win.

I graduated from WMU before this program came to fruition, but I know that if it had been around when I was preparing to start school, I absolutely would’ve made it a point to check it out. You can get an education anywhere, but it’s the relationships you foster with faculty and other students that truly shape your experience.
