Plymouth’s Downtown Development Authority put a whole new spin on the concept of shopping local this holiday season. Shoppers on the streets have been treated to a special thank you on behalf of DDA employees and business owners.
According to Plymouth’s Patch.com, the Christmas season encouraged 15 downtown Plymouth businesses to offer up discount gift cards which were then handed out to unsuspecting and happy shoppers in the area.
The article noted that they “range from free admission at the Penn Theatre to $50 off a purchase at Delta Diamond as part of the downtown holiday promotion.” Other participating venues included: Magnolia, Home Sweet Home, Haven, Core Sport, Salon Awesome,That’s Awesome, House of Fudge and Nico & Vali.
According to the story:
“It’s kind of like the Christmas season coming to them,” said Tony Bruscato, Director of Operations with the DDA. “People are getting presents. Here, they get stopped in the middle of the sidewalk and we say, here this is yours.”
The promotion puts a whole new spin on the shop local concept. It encourages patrons to visit downtown Plymouth stores but it also allows shopper to keep some more money in their pockets at a time of year when that truly makes a difference.
What do you think about the surprise gift card program? Would you benefit from such a gift? Would it encourage you to shop at a store you hadn’t visited before?
