In the film The Polar Express, a doubting child is whisked to the North Pole on a magical train to see for himself whether Santa Claus really exists. It’s become a holiday favorite – and happens to be showing at Plymouth’s Penn Theatre at 7 p.m. tonight.
Have you ever wondered what it might be like if The Polar Express were tangible? In Clinton Township the Christmas tale, originally a book by Chris Van Allsburg, has been set in motion to bring a little magic into the lives of children with life-threatening illnesses.
The Rainbow Connection, a Rochester-based non-profit organization that grants wishes to such children, provided families with a ride on The Holiday Express in Clinton Township earlier this month. It was meant as an escape and festive day for families dealing with a difficult time. The train ride was followed by a reading of the beloved tale of The Polar Express and the event was coordinated through Clinton Township Parks and Recreation. C and G Newspaper Reporter Heidi Roman detailed and emotional but fun-filled day in her story A Ride on Reading Railroad.
For those interested in learning more about The Rainbow Connection, and perhaps donating to help make a child’s wish come true this holiday season, visit www.rainbowconnection.org. The site includes stories and even the chance to refer a child, if you know someone worthy of a holiday wish.
It’s the time of year when we tend to think of our loved ones and exchange gifts. Why not give to families who could use a little holiday magic, too?
