In a digital world, it is refreshing to work with analog formats from time to time. When it comes to music, many contemporary bands still subscribe to pressing their music up on vinyl and even cassette tapes. Metro Detroit boasted an impressive amount of vinyl releases this year. Detroit-based Five Three Dial Tone Records was responsible for a few of them.
Five Three Dial Tone Records (FTDT) have been in existence for less than two years and have released six vinyl pieces and four cassettes, all of which are limited edition. Their band roster is eclectic; there does not seem to be a specific musical aesthetic that they tend to support. One of their flagship acts happens to be a band by the name of Lettercamp. Fronted by Liz Wittman, Lettercamp is an electro pop outfit with retrofitting influences like Madonna and Cyndi Lauper, but with the modern sensibilities of fellow female indie pop vocalists like M.I.A., Lykke Li and Eleanor Kate Jackson of La Roux. Music categorization is a tricky task, so it is probably better if you just see for yourself, right?
Five Three Dial Tone is so confident in the product they release that they give the digital versions away for free. Obviously, there is the hope that you will actually support the label and the artists with your hard-earned disposable income. For Lettercamp, that means buying their limited edition 10-inch vinyl or the Prelude to a Miss edition cassette.
On Saturday, December 10th, FTDT celebrates another round of releases. This time they are for The Satin Peaches and Illy Mack. That night, they are throwing a free show at The Belmont in Hamtramck, MI. To help support the release, The Paragon Life is hosting a contest to give one person the entire FTDT discography. To enter the contest for the FTDT project set (valued at $40), please do the following:
- “Like” Five Three Dial Tone Records and The Paragon Life on Facebook

It was, and still is, my vinyl copy of Janis Joplin’s Pearl. Surely not an early pressing or anything of that nature, but I love hearing her voice on vinyl. It’s a must-have-nearby for me.

For me, it has to have been a record passed down to me by my Father- Miles Davis “Bitches Brew”. I didn’t fully give it a chance until I was about 20 and it forever changed my perception of music.
