Will DVDs become a thing of the past?

It used to be the natural way…
Go to the nearest video store, load up enough videos to watch for the weekend and take them back before the Sunday night deadline.

That seems like dinosaur years ago.

Now there are dedicated web sites that stream old movies, recently released movies, old and new television shows. The networks also stream their own shows for you to watch on your computer or with your internet TV setup. Then there’s the ability to purchase movies directly from sites like iTunes.

Even Netflix is giving you little reason to get DVDs from them and they made their brand sending millions of DVDs through the mail.

A Netflix subscription works like this:
You pick a plan to have a certain number of DVDs sent to you to watch at any given time.
You watch the DVDs, then send them back to Netfilx in a supplied return envelop.

It couldn’t be easier. Or could it?

Netflx also gives you the ability to stream content directly to your computer making your trip to the mailbox obsolete. Let’s hope we don’t start looking like the people in the movie Wall*E.

Being able to just click the “Play” button while sitting on the bed, in the kitchen, at the park, or anywhere else with my iPad is stuff imagined years ago while watching the Jetson’s. But it is the very real now.

While Netflix still delivers DVDs through the mail, I’m sure that in the future, this method will go the way of the dinosaur…
