Did you spend Halloween watching The Walking Dead? I couldn’t help myself. I’d been waiting and anticipating the new AMC show since I first caught a glimpse of the previews months ago.
Zombies and a post-apocalyptic world? Sign me up.
Even more exciting? Troy Mich. native Steve Yeun is a cast member on the show. According to the Web site ChannelAPA.com he will portray Glenn, a survivor and risk-taker who – as a former pizza delivery person – can take shortcuts through Atlanta to scavenge for supplies.
According to AMC-TV, Yeun grew up in Troy and attended Kalamazoo College, where he discovered improvisational theatre. He honed his skills at Chicago’s Second City and worked in the theatre scene there before moving to Los Angeles. You might’ve recently seen him on an episode of The Big Bang Theory.
The Walking Dead, which premiered last night, seems to be following in the footsteps of several impressive original AMC -TV shows. On the heels of successful creations like Mad Men, this drama looks promising, if a lot more frightening.
It explores the terrifying notion that the world has undergone a sort of zombie apocalypse. Those who have survived live in fear of the walkers – zombies who roam the streets and are a constant threat..
The show is based on Robert Kirkman’s graphic novels. It is directed by Frank Darabont.
Based on the first 90-minute episode, I was really impressed by the realistic look of the zombies and the landscape. The character development, beginning with Deputy Rick Grimes, already has me hooked.
He was shot during a police pursuit and went into a coma. When he awoke, alone in a hospital, we saw the city through his eyes – dead bodies stacked up, silence, an unexplained passage of time, and the beginning of his quest to find his wife and son.
His life is threatened by a boy with a shovel. He’s knocked unconscious. But later Duane and his father, Morgan, take Rick in and explain the truth about the walkers and the reality hits hard. The Walking Dead looks like it has a good deal of promise.
What are some of the new TV shows you’re watching right now? What do you Tivo and follow week-to-week?
