Treat pets to a safe, not scary Halloween

Don't let this little one out of your site around Halloween

With Halloween just around the corner, our thoughts often turn to costumes, trick-or-treating and candy apples.

Don’t forget, this time of year can mean scary stuff for the family pet. With strangers traipsing up to the front door one after the other masked and covered in makeup, Fido won’t quite know what to make of it all. Pet safety is important on Halloween, too.

The Michigan Humane Society, with a great location nearby in Westland, shared some helpful tips to consider:

  • Don’t leave animals outside on or close to Halloween. While most people have good intentions, some may be tempted to harm them.
  • It’s especially important to keep cats indoors this time of year.
  • Be sure your pet is licensed and has an ID tag affixed to a collar. Microchipping is also helpful. If fluffy escapes, this increases the chances she’ll be safely returned.
  • Keep Halloween candy safely out of reach. Chocolate is toxic to dogs, cats and ferrets. Candy wrappers are dangerous too.
  • Costumes are another matter. If you do dress your pet, introduce the outfit days earlier to make sure it’s not a source of stress. Be sure the costume isn’t going to restrict the animal’s ability to move, breathe or see.
  • Always keep pets away from jack-lanterns or lit candles, whether you’re at home or trick-or-treating to other people’s homes.

Can you think of any other tips to share to help keep pets safe this season?
