Coneys and beer – could a Livonia restaurant alter the liquor law?

October 11, 2010
By

Livonia’s Koney Island Inn could drastically change its menu if the restaurant is granted a beer and wine license. The Detroit Free Press reported on its application and the discussion that has ensued as a result.

It’s not easy to imagine a coney island style restaurant – Michigan answer to the Greek-inspired diner – serving up beer alongside spinach pie and chili-covered coney dogs. But the restaurant, located at Livonia Marketplace, at 7 Mile and Middlebelt roads, could earn the right to do just that if the state gives it the green light for a tavern license.

Detroit Free Press Staff Writer Eric D. Lawrence reported that the Livonia City Council is already on board with the idea. A committee may determine whether a policy should be created in case other coney island restaurants should seek a liquor license. According to his story:

Councilman Brian Meakin said the committee will weigh the issue because of concerns the request by one coney island to sell alcohol could prompt others to follow suit.

“What’s the point of having a liquor license if everyone’s going to have them? Is it going to get to the point where Burger King and McDonald’s are going to have them?” he said.

No one from the Koney Island Inn was available for comment Friday.

The Michigan Liquor Control Commission is expected to decide on the Koney Island Inn license application in coming weeks. Sharon Martin, the agency’s director of licensing, said the license being sought by the restaurant would allow it to sell only beer and wine.

She said coney islands with tavern licenses currently operate in a number of other cities, and she is unaware of any specific problems involving those restaurants. She noted that any public restaurant could qualify for a tavern license as long as it has the proper approval from its community.

Ted’s Coney Island in Richmond and Port Huron both serve beer, it is nice to have the option although i don’t always combine the two.
