Every year around this time I have a little fall tradition of my own. As soon as the leaves start to fall from the trees and there’s a chill in the air, I like to curl up on the couch and invite friends over for a scary movie fest of my own.
Break out the pumpkin ale and cheers to the classic spook-tastic movies – everything from Frankenstein and The Mummy to 80s slashers like Freddie Kruger in A Nightmare on Elm Street and hockey-masked Jason of Friday the 13th fame. October can’t go by without at least one screening of The Shining and one of the original Halloween.
But Paragon residents living near Plymouth don’t even have to plan ahead or pop the corn themselves. Nope. You can just trot on over to the historic Penn Theatre for the Shocktober Classic Series. It begins next month and features weekly haunts from the forefathers of horror. The price is right, too – just $3 per ticket.
Here’s the schedule:
- Dracula (1931) starring Bela Lugosi – 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7
- The Invisible Man (1933) – 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14
- The Wolf Man (1941) starring Claude Rains – 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21
- Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy (1955) – 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28
- Poltergeist (1982) – Rated PG-13, this creepy classic offers a great way to spend Halloween. Showing 7 p.m. and 9:10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30 and 5 p.m. and 7:10 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31.
The Penn is located at 760 Penniman Avenue in downtown Plymouth. Call (734) 453-0870 for more information.

Not sure my favorite scary movie counts as scary, but it’s Shaun of the Dead. Or wait, maybe the original Dracula. Hmm. The Fly?
Ooh, how about the subtle thriller, “Wait Until Dark?”
