With the Labor Day holiday weekend just a week away, it’s time to make some decisions. So what will it be? Are you planning that annual trip to Old Mission Peninsula? Going to explore Michigan’s scenic Wine Country? It’s pretty amazing up there. Or do you wander up to a cabin with the family?
Is it a city escape you crave? Perhaps Chicago or New York with friends? According to today’s Kalamazoo Gazette – most Michiganians are sticking close to home again this year. About 1.2 million of us might be hitting the road in honor of the holiday weekend – but we won’t go too far.
Reporter Rex Hall Jr. said travel predictions are flat, and close to to those of 2009. Our economy is keeping us closer to home, even as national numbers begin to rise. According to the article:
It’s an indication that there is some pent-up demand for trips, but people are watching their budgets carefully as they worry about the economy, AAA Travel Services Director Glen MacDonell said.
“We’re a little concerned on the fall and whether or not people will start to pull back on their wallets,” he said.
Most of those who do travel, do so by car. We’re lucky that gas prices aren’t too much of an issue. The cost of gasoline is only a dime higher, the story said, compared to a year ago at this time.
