Pork without a fork

Get ready to have your hands dripping with all kinds of sauces and prepare you teeth for the tender, juicy bite of Ribfest Kalamazoo, Aug. 5-7.

Every year, restaurants and chefs take it to the streets for the big grilling festival at Arcadia Creek place. If you are a pork eater, head downtown to sample the best of the areas ribs.

The Verve Pipe (they sang that “We were only freshmen” song way back) and Eddie Money will take the stage Friday and Saturday night at 10 p.m. Drinks and ribs will be served so you can party and sing along. Just, please, chew with your mouth closed. The only ground pork I want to see should be on my plate.

Friday at 2, you can win free stuff: ribs, tee-shirts, coupons and more. All you have to do is ask the chefs a rib-related question. If they hesitate in answering, then you get a prize.

Thursday at 5, watch the restaurants and caterers battle it out for bragging rights and a spot in next year’s ribfest. Think you can grill better than them? Join the amateur competition of the Kalamazoo Cook-off. It’s $25 to enter. The competition runs from noon to 5 Saturday with cash prizes awarded at the end.

There also will be facepainting, games, music and kid-friendly food. So have family fun during the day and then ditch the youngsters and party the night away.

While you’re down there, check out the roof deck and outdoor stage over at Wild Bull and Monaco Bay.
