So, I haven’t told you all to go to an art hop in a while. Maybe I have been depressed that I haven’t been able to enjoy an art hop in the past few months. Long gone are the frequent 4-day weekends. I have been spending most of my Friday nights reading Saturday’s newspaper and making sure it’s done right.
But, alas, I will have this Friday night free. And who else would I spend it with but the most creative minds this city harbors? So, if you happen to run into me downtown around 7 p.m., I will most likely be at one of my top picks for the July 9 hop:
Shawntai’s picks
- Fire Studio: “Generations” is a collection of African American art from the 1930s to present. Not only am I black and hoping to see a reflection of myself and ancestors in this art, but I also love the venue that will be hosting this exhibit. Fire is quickly becoming a second home and offers so much to its community. Plus the staff are friendly and energetic.
- The Wine Loft: Part of me just wants to go into The Wine Loft for reasons that have nothing to do with art. I know they will have excellent wine, cozy seating, a warm atmosphere and, most-likely, a friendly staff. But, I am looking forward to seeing the photography of Nick Sward. I have seen samples of his work, and he’s no joke. Expect quality photography that plays with lighting, texture and color.
- Saniwax Gallery, Park Trades: Anyone who truly knows me, knows that I am a jewelry enthusiast. I love to accessorize and wear something truly artistic. So, seeing the work of Garrylee McCormick is near the top of my list. Besides jewelry, he makes icons, prints, cards and silk screens.
- Gallery 344: Speaking of wearable art, Ashley Rafferty will be debuting a new line of jewelry. From the samples I have seen, her creations seem to be very natural and earth-driven. I am very into this style right now!
