More Sad Times for Detroit

June 1, 2010
By

Last Tuesday was another day in a long string of sad days for the city of Detroit.   Former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was sent to prison for violating his parole and lying in court, AGAIN.   I say it is a sad day for Detroit, not because Kilpatrick went to prison, but because Kilpatrick went to prison.  One might say that is a contradiction but I assure you it is not.  Detroit and the metro area should not be saddened by his sentence to prison.  It is quite a simple decision to send someone who continues to make a mockery of our justice system to prison.  It is not a simple decision to add to the distress that continues to befall Detroit regularly.  So when I say it is sad that he was sent to prison I mean that it is sad for the city that he has so little respect for the citizens, the law, his family and himself that he drags Detroit down the gutter with him.

I know that I sound harsh.  I am.  When it comes to this type of lying and this type of abuse of power I am damned mad.  I am so sick of people in power taking advantage of this power and harming others in the interim.  As if cheating on his wife wasn’t bad enough, he had to do it with a co-worker and city employee.  He abused power and his office and then had the audacity to lie in court about it.  What happens in his home and whether or not he lies to his wife, while disgusting, is none of our business.   When you take it to work and you are the Mayor of Detroit, it becomes our business.   There have been so many allegations from “the party” to Mrs. Kilpatrick attacking dancers at that party, hidden money, high lifestyles and so much more.  Its time someone put an end to the abuse of power and I believe the judge took a step in the right direction.

I don’t know if the sentence will make an impact in the future and set an example for others in power to rethink abusing that power.  These people in power who abuse it believe they are above the law that is why they abuse the power in the first place.  We can only hope that this will be the example needed and that  at the very least it will make others think before they act.

The city of Detroit needs to put this to rest, but with an appeal in the works it is likely that Detroit will continue to be at the receiving end of this embarrassment.  So the saga will continue.  We have not seen the last of Mr. Kilpatrick.  He is going to be a black eye on the city of Detroit for some time to come.  Maybe the light at the end of the tunnel for Detroit will be when his time in prison is up and he has completed his restitution to the city.  It was a wise decision for he and his family to leave the city.  Maybe while he’s in prison, the city can get the much deserved break it needs and focus on issues beyond the life and times of Kwame Kilpatrick.
