Raise a glass to Liberty Street Brewing Co.

May 14, 2010

I might’ve been one of the first people to set foot inside Plymouth’s Liberty Street Brewing Co. Yes, I like craft beer but that wasn’t what initially brought me to the quaint downtown brewery. Just days before Owner Joe Walters opened the doors, he invited me down for an interview. I was working as a reporter at a local newspaper at the time and recall trudging through knee-deep snow and freezing temperatures to find the place.

With one look I could tell Liberty Street Brewing Co. was the sort of spot I’d frequent, if I lived closer to downtown Plymouth. And it was clear Walters had built the place out of a sheer passion for brewing great beer. He’d turned a hobby into a career and this place – nestled in Plymouth’s historic Old Village area – was the culmination of it all. I felt lucky to see it in its infancy and it’s good to know business is going strong.

Shortly after that interview I moved on to a new job at a public relations agency. Many of our clients specialized in craft beer so I learned a lot about the business. My appreciation for a great craft brew continued to grow.

Truth be told I’m not much of a drinker. But if you slide a citrusy wit or a chocolatey stout my way, I’ll gladly raise a glass.

When I noticed that Liberty Street’s Tart Cherry Porter has won first place at the World Expo of Beer in Frankenmuth for two years running, it took me back to those early days. I thought it worthy of mention. If you haven’t made it out to Liberty Street Brewing Co. here is a list of the beers you’ve been missing. In addition, the Upper Hall hosts live music and events. And the menu is stocked with beer-friendly munchies from White Bean Chicken Chili to Pizza.

What’s your favorite neighborhood watering hole? What would you rate as the best craft brew around?
