The medical marijuana debate rages on in metro Detroit

May 10, 2010

The debate over Michigan’s new medical marijuana law rages on in some local communities. Cities like Plymouth are forging a battle against it.

A  recent article in the Plymouth Observer reported that the Plymouth City Commission has unanimously approved the first reading of a amendment to Plymouth’s zoning ordinance that bans anything already prohibited by federal law. Marijuana use, for any purpose, falls squarely into that category.

Michigan’s controversial medical marijuana law restricts the use of the drug for medical purposes. It requires a limited group of people – those suffering from debilitating diseases – access to marijuana for its medicinal properties. A doctor must review the patients’ medical records and confirm access is needed.

Other cities, like Livonia and Troy have done the same – in an effort to regulate marijuana use. By comparison, Southfield houses the state’s first medical marijuana clinic. It opened late in 2009. In the article, published last week, Plymouth Mayor Dan Dwyer was quoted as saying: “I’m not interested in having a medical marijuana store in downtown Plymouth.”

This led us to wonder…what are your views on medical marijuana? Did you support the law? And if so, how do you feel about cities like Plymouth that are working to circumvent the state law to keep marijuana – in all forms – illegal?

STUFFED SHIRTS. First of all Obama has told the federal courts to stop convicting marijuana use. We are a ways from it becoming totally legalized but it is becoming decriminilized.

To think that any city official would override the law for medical use is absurd. When one of ant city’s official contracts a painful debillitating disease we’ll see how things change.

A close friend of mine recently passed away from cancer that ended up in her brain. Medical marijuana made her last weeks tolerable.

Our priorities in this country are so screwed up. Watch the drunk (who might be the next drunk to kill one of our children while driving) walk out of the LEGAL licquor store but do not allow such a safe “herb” be sold. Alchohol does not grow on our earth!!!
